Sevenoaks District Scouts

Young leaders and Duke of Edinburgh Volunteers

If you're 14-18 you can become a Young Leader, assisting with Scouting in a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop.

You can Young Lead on a regular basis or you can Young Lead as part of your Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) volunteering service for the length of time for the relevant award.

As a Young Leader you are a part of the Explorer Scout section and automatically a member of the Young Leader Unit, unless this is part of your DofE Service section, whether you attend Explorer meetings or not.

As a Young Leader there is a requirement to complete Module A of the Young Leaders' scheme within the first 3 months of starting to volunteer - this applies to DofE volunteers too.   This is run regularly in Sevenoaks and also offered by the County too. See below.

As a Young Leader, you can choose to

  • Attend regular Explorer Scout meetings
  • Attend Young Leader meetings
  • Attend both

If you choose to attend the Young Leader meetings only, you can still get involved in Explorer Activities, including all of the activities listed on the Kent Explorer web page.

More information about the Young Leader scheme and the training available look at the County website

Sevenoaks Young leader Unit

The Sevenoaks Young Leader unit will meet for training and sharing of ideas as well as supporting you to achieve the Young Leader missions. The primary objective of the unit is to help develop and nurture your leadership skills. For additional information and factsheets about the Young Leader programme please use the below link.

Kent Scouts provides 2 weekends a year usually (March & October) when all the young leaders training modules are run in one place. These can be found on the county page.

It is hoped that all Young Leaders will have the opportunity to complete Module A training within 3 months of becoming a young leader this will entitle them to wear the Young Leader badge. This can be at either the County weekends or locally in Sevenoaks at Young Leader meetings.

Young leaders have 12 modules to complete and 4 missions. Once they have completed the scheme they can be awarded their Young Leader Belt.

All young leaders should receive an "Orange Card" which is Guidance for Young Leaders. A copy of which can be found below.

If you are interested in becoming a Young Leader, or have any questions please contact Mike Randall
