Fellowship tour Lullingstone World Garden - 00-00-0000
On a beautiful sunny afternoon in
June Mr. Guy Hart Dyke, the
owner of the Castle, welcomed
the Scout Fellowship and friends.
He described the history and
development of the Estate and
family before taking us on a tour
of the Church and principal
rooms in the House. We were
then greeted by Tom Hart Dyke
who, with his usual energy and
enthusiasm, took us on a tour of
his World Garden. On the way he
showed us the long herbaceous
border still maintained by his Gran who, although in her nineties, had been tending
the plants early that morning. We all wished we could bottle some of her energy. He
let us into his Gran’s secret for keeping her hosta plants snail and slug free - she uses
Columbian coffee grouts under the foliage! Tom was especially excited that R.H.S.
Kew had asked him to trial new geranium plants, which we were privileged to see
before the Inspectors from Kew. Tom explained the concept of the World Garden and
as we wandered around he described the growing habits of its plants. Luckily they
didn’t all grow at the rate of one flower spike, which was some two metres tall and
grew at the rate of 150mm each day. You could almost see it growing. Our total tour
lasted nearly three hours and our thanks go to both Guy and Tom Hart Dyke for a very
enjoyable afternoon.
